This weekend: Visit the zoo with a view!
Having been to many zoos around the world, I still hold Sydney Taronga Zoo to be one of the best ones in terms of display, experience and location. Oh yeah, do these animal baby have the best location in Sydney – right on the cliffs off Bradley’s Head!
In property terms, this sweet little property could be worth a few millions, but priority goes to our fluffy friends.
Arrive early in the morning to beat the crowd; the zoo is only 15 minutes by ferry from Circular Quay. You can buy a Zoo Pass at the ferry terminal; the price includes return ferry trip and the entrance to the zoo. It is also possible to reach the zoo by bus from Winyard but catching a ferry means you can sit out on the desk and enjoy the beautiful harbour Sydney is always boasting about. Once you reach the Zoo, you then get a cable car up to the entrance. You might want to grab a map and plan your visit, as the zoo is quite large and trying to find your favourite animals can be hard.
My favourites include our playful, hairy relatives – the Gorilla. Watching as the young gorillas playfully tackles each other and roll around on their backs, while their mothers and the Silverback father sit authoritatively watching, while chewing on their fruit and cabbage. Next on the list are the Meerkats. Okay so I was a big fan of the reality TV show Meerket Manor, and these edgy little things never stopped to fascinate me. They can sit so still, watching every movement around them, and bolt as soon as they sense danger. It’s like watching my cat jumping at the slightest noise, or running at full speed up the corridor every time the rubbish trucks come. Maybe it’s a cat-lover thing.
While you are there, you also shouldn’t miss the bird flight show, daily at 12pm and 3pm. Watch pigeons, parrots, hawks, owls and even a Brolga do their tricks at the command of their trainers at the amphitheatre, strategically situated with a clear view of the harbour. You are bound to enjoy yourself. If only training our own children can be just as easy!
There are plenty more fascinating animals to view in the zoo, and marine lovers should not miss the Seal Show daily at 1pm and 2:15pm. Then your feet are tired, head over to the food hall and fuel up before getting up to explore more.
