"If travel is my heroin, then planning the next trip is my methadone" (Dale, 2001)
That, is exactly what I have been doing for the past few weeks.
Call me a freak, but I have been putting a spreadsheet together, with different possible destinations, a sample itinerary, number of days required for this itinerary and it's estimated costs. I've arranged them from short trips to long trips so that if I knew I had certain number of days available in the future, I can just go to this spreadsheet and pick out a trip and go with it.
And I am very proud of this spreadsheet!
After much researching and looking into destinations I have not been to (as you know, that's my main drive for picking a destination) I have started having strong interest in the Phillipines for the following reasons:
1. I haven't been there.
2. It's relatively close to travel to for a shorter trip if required
3. It's relatively cheap.
4. It's not a destination where a 'stop over' will be common. So cannot really be tagged onto a longer trip to the US/Europe/Africa like I do with Singapore/Malaysia/Thailand for example.
I know there has been much debate about the safety in the Phillipines, but before I went to Peru, there were also strong advise against travelling to Peru (it was just before one of their elections and politically unstable at the time), and it was fine. I feel that anywhere in the world has its risks, even here in Sydney, and therefore, I don't let once off incidents stop me from visiting certain places.
Anyways, so for my first trip I'd like an overview of the place, by visiting Manila, Cebu and Bohol. I am thinking... 2 nights in Manila, 4 nights in Cebu and 2 nights in Bohol. This will leave me plenty to do for my second/third trips in the future.

While I wait for my next adventure (in 3 days! We are off to the Gold Coast Hinterland this weekend!) I've been working away at my writing. I would love you to read them

The life of a Gypsy suits me fine too. Love to live in different cultures and meet unique individuals. I ahve now spent more of my adult life over seas than I have in Oz.
I hate to travel to a place for only a week or so though, just don't learn anything that way. Never been into the get a hotel room type vacation, always drift towards the locals. Everywhere I land I try to work and interact for at least 6 months.
Boston is currently where I am playing and trust me the wife has a spread sheet and detailed list before we arrive anywhere....so good going on getting organized. Hope you have a divine time.

"I hate to travel to a place for only a week or so though" - me too. When younger I never also used to stay in hotels.
But I've made a life choice and got married, and now have a mortage to pay and full time work to do. Unfortunately the ultimate travel experience had to sacrifice
