Travel guides censorships in China
November 17th 2007 11:57
As I sip my coffee and flipped through the Travel section of the weekend paper, I came across this headline: Chinese take-away: guidebooks
Apparently, the Chinese government doesn't like the way the guide books (not just Lonely Planet) have Taiwan as a different colour and showing having its own capital city on their maps, suggesting that they are of a separate political entity. They decided to start confiscating them on the grounds of incorrect information.
Intrigued, I kept on reading and laughed, at the expense of Chinese politics.
Not only do they want their own people to be ignorant with their internal censorship, they are starting to get to us as well.
The Chinese government has been known for their arrogance. Especially when it comes to the issue of Taiwan.
This is making me not wanting to visit China anymore, despite all its culture and history (mostly removed by the Cultural Revolution anyway).
