"It is through travel that we meet and understand other people and at this time, when there is so much anger and misunderstanding in the world, travel is more important than it has ever been." - Tony Wheeler, 2005-Lonely Planet.... Travel String is here to connect the dots, to share my believe that it is by travelling that we learn from each other, that we make friendship, not war, and that, in this beautiful world of ours, there are still those of us who wish to experience it in its natural form, rather than destroy it. I hope you'll enjoy the journey with me.

A trip to the top end: Part 2

From Darwin (see previous post), we drove out to Litchfield National Park. Mostly famous for its gigantic termite mounts and numerious waterfalls and natural plunge pools around the park, I thoroughly enjoyed our time spent there.

Litchfield are affected by crocodiles, so when choosing a waterfall or rockpool to swim in, please take care to read the notice and check if any crocodile management are in place or whether the place is safe for a dip.

Rockholes
There are plenty of places like these in Litchfield for a cool dip in natural spring water

Croc Safety
Look out for warning before swimming

Swimming surrounded by nature certainly beats swimming in a pool. And I actually would say beats swimming at a beach also as when floating around the calm waters facing a waterfall, surrounded by lush green forests of trees and thousands year told earth, it's like being in the garden of Eden.

There are large waterfalls and small waterfalls, and a place where rockholes make excellent swimming pools and natural spa from the rush of the cold spring water. It's not matter even locals would drive the 1.5 hours to get here just for a good day out.

Stopping at a field of termite mounts I was amazed by the sheer size and construction of these towering mounts by the little insignificant termites. We saw Magnetic Termite mounts and Cathedral Termite mounts, both impressive and beautiful and both not the "white ants" as we commonly call them. And these actually eat grass, not chew on wood as the ones we find in our homes. What amazing creatures!

During wet season many of the Litchfield areas are closed off due to flooding and crocodile activity, so visit during the dry season between May to October. It's also not as hot and easier for camping and outdoor activities.

Beautiful work, Amy, I felt the refreshing coolness of the waters and experienced the fear of the crocodiles, but witnessed, too, the skill and dexterity of those termites and their contribution to the terrain.

Amy, I just love this part of the world. I did it two years in a row about 3yrs ago with my parents who are crazy 4WD's. My step dad is best mates with the ranger of Lichfield so we got to go to some crazy places off the track and I got to assist with emptying croc traps.
I miss it heaps!!

2 of my pics from the trip - I have about 2000 more lol

Hi Lilla, yes that's where I've been - the waters were certainly a great cooling agent, until you have to step out back into the humid hot atmosphere...

James - you should be there in person!
