I want to talk about Thai massages.
It's my favourite form of massage over all others in Sydney, and while I am finally in the country I booked myself into a massage session yesterday.
I knew the drill, as I am a regular at the massage place in Glebe (in Sydney) near work. You change into loose clothing, then you get your muscles stretched, bones cracked and body aligned into utter bliss (afterwards). However, even this knowledge did not prepare me for what was to come.
So, the usual loose clothing was on, and it started. I had the usual foot stretches (absolutely perfect after a long day of walking around), leg stretches and arm stretches, then she flipped me over and began the pounding.
"The more you in pain, the better you feel after!" she said, laughing as I held my breath, trying not to scream. Let's just say, they were a little gentler in Glebe.
How does someone so little come with so much force I do not know, but I was not only stretched and aligned, I was also being kneaded, and even walked on until every stubborn muscle was forced to relax and that the masseuse was happy with the results. I was in agony.
It wasn't until the hour was up, until she put her palms together and bowed, indicating the hour of torture was finished, did I feel light as a feather. It was true, I felt great, and my shoulders are no longer stiff from sitting all day at the computer. I placed my palms together and returned the bow. I think my chiropractor will be happy when she sees me next.
A sign at the door of the Spa said: "Traditional thai massages do not include sexual favours". I can understand why men from certain cultures may have mis-interpreted impressions of Thai massages. They often do put you in compromising positions for the purposes of stretching parts of your body you never knew existed. However these positions, when seen from behind the curtain could be considered erotic and sexual. I once had a massage by a male masseuse in Sydney and it was about half way through a back stretch that I thought, you know, in another situation this could easily render me unfaithful to my husband!

I visited Coran Boutique Spa in Bangkok. One hour of traditional Thai massages are 400Baht. There are plenty of massage centres in Thailand, it is wise to choose carefully as some are in fact, seedy. Unless of course, that's what you are looking for.
