Hotel Review: Rydges Hideaway, Coral Coast - Fiji
The Coral Coast of Fiji is aboundant with quality accomodation for those wishing to stay on the mainland of Fiji. Not only are the accommodation generally cheaper than the outer islands, they are also almost all on the beachside providing excellent view and swimming/snorkelling opportunities right outside your rooms.
On our last trip to Fiji, we opted to stay at the Rydges Hideaway resort on the Coral Coast, and I must say I enjoyed it very much.
The resort is only a 3 star property, noting its older style of decor and lack of 'luxury' furnishings that you would otherwise see in the neighbouring Outrigger on the Lagoon and the Warwick Resort. However it is by no means inferior in quality.
We were greeted with friendly Bula!s as soon as we arrived, and as its a smaller, boutique style resort, the staff get to know you after a couple of days. There is a good sized pool, excellent drinks menu at the bar, daily complimentary activities including volleyball, snorkelling lessons, Fijian lessons and even free scuba diving lessons in the pool for those looking to have a feel of the real thing.
The resort offers three types of accommodation: garden bures, oceanview bures and ocean front villas. We stayed in the oceanview bure, which is small and slightly outdated in decor but extremely well positioned. Right outside our front door we have access to the beach, and a small balcony when we feel like just relaxing and watch the world go by. Beach front villas are larger versions of the oceanview bures, with an outdoor shower/bath area and a hammock on the balcony.
The onsite dive shop is a good choice for divers who look for sites closer around the Coral Coast. One boat dive with gear hire is FJ$120 with discounts for multiple dives, and first timers to Fiji will find this sufficient as the dive sites are literally about 500m from shore where a wall drops from 2m to 30m deep. There are corals of all colours, schools of fish and the occassional reef sharks to explore. Water is warm and conditions are good.
Entertainment is also an important part of resort life and Hideaway makes sure all guests are catered for. Nightly entertainment is arranged from the nearby village for all to enjoy after dinner.
Speaking of food - there is just one disappointing thing - although there are 2 different restaurants on site, the food is nothing spectacular. I was hoping to experience traditional Fijian cuisine, however end up eating pasta, pizza and hamburgers for the entire stay.
Overall resort rating, I give it 7/10.
