Go local this long weekend
It’s a long weekend coming up for some of the states and if you haven’t planned anything, don’t bother, unless you are willing to cash out $150 for a hotel room from Secret Hotels.com, you might as well entertain yourself locally.
Most people don’t realise that just because you live there, doesn’t mean you can’t explore and be a bit of a tourist from time to time. You know when you meet a traveller and they all seem to have seen more of Australia than you have, as you boast that you have seem most of their country than they have? Well, it’s the same concept. We don’t seem to want to explore our own little territory, but taking the time to look out, you might be pleasantly surprised that there are so many things you can do just around the corner.
A good place to start is to check out your council or city websites as well as landmark websites. There is always a ‘What’s On’ page informing everyone the events and festivals that might be happening now and soon. For example, if you head to the City of Sydney website, you’ll find out that this week in Darling Harbour, the festival is on this whole weekend for you to enjoy all sorts of Latin American performances, culture shows and cuisine.
Alternatively, weekends are usually full of markets. I especially enjoy markets as they often have stalls of original art, jewellery, clothing and accessories, and they are designs that are unique and not sold commercially. You can take all day browsing a market, dig up some old books you have always wanted to read, get a tarot reading or simply just find that perfect necklace you have always dreamed of. It’s a way of supporting local businesses as well and you know you’ll have a good time.
What if I really still want to get away? Well, got a tent and sleeping bags? Go to the National Park’s website and find your nearest national park. Often there are designated camp grounds in national parks for a minimal fee and there is simply nothing better than having nature all around you. Some parks are even good for just day trips so pack a picnic and off you go.
There are plenty of local options for weekends and if you look hard enough, there is always something interesting on. Pretend you are a tourist in your own city, it’s actually – a lot of fun!
