Kota Kinabalu - Sabah

Kota Kinabalu is Sabah's major city. Last year a client of mine bought a 6 month ticket and came back raving about the place. It wasn't so much the attractions that he enjoyed, as within the city centre there wasn't much to see - it was the people and the friendly atmosphere that attracted him.
I now have to agree. Kota Kinabalu isn't the most exciting of cities. Within the city centre tourist attractions limit to museums, restaurants and a day trip out to the islands. However the friendly people, the laid back atmosphere can really have a positive effect on you and I could imagine myself living here, if I ever have to move to Malaysia.
Kota Kinabalu does however, serve as a good grounding place for day trips out to many of Sabah's beautiful places, such as Mount Kinabalu, South East Asia's tallest mountain, the islands of the nearby marine national parks as well as a gateway to the rest of Sabah.
Snorkelling is good off the surrounding islands, and scuba diving looks extremely good. Unfortunately I ran out of days and money by the time we were here that I didn't get to dive, but having spoken to some fellow travellers who went on diving trips could not stop talking about it.
You can also access the tiny rich nation of Brunei easily from Kota Kinabalu as well - I'll leave that for next time
