Venice, the water city

I wasn't too sure what to expect of Venice, a city so highly regarded by tourists, yet so much criticised for its mass tourism that has polluted its waters and drove the prices of food and accommodation sky high for the Venetians. Apparently during the main tourist seasons it is hot and humid and its waters stink of sewerage.

Canal Grande
Along the Canal Grande just out of the train station

Luckily, my visit was just two weeks off the peak season and the streets of Venice were still relatively clear and clean. The only down side is a lot of the cafes and shops do not open during these times because they don't get enough business to sustain their operation.

Quiet streets
During off peak seasons there are plenty of quiet streets to enjoy

St Mark's square
St Mark's square still full of people though, most tourists do stay around this area

Venice is the water city. The only form of transport is on water and its 'buses' run frequently from port to port delivering people to various squares and islands.

I didn't stay in Venice. No backpacker accommodation were available in this city so if you are travelling on a budget it's wise to stay just out of Venice to save that cost. Arriving in Venice by train I did enjoy a whole day exploring its many small lane ways and the zig zagging water canals.

Venice canals
THIS is what I call charming

As usual, I walked through lanes opposite to what the tourists usually choose and find myself in small corners of Venice that still has a local presence. I can't argue the claims that Venice is indeed a beautiful city. It's full of ambiance, full of character. It is unfortunate that it's slowly sinking, and the mass tourism that flood its streets every year simply does not help.

Fosters in Venice
This is the result of mass tourism. They all think we actually like to drink Fosters.

If you do find a chance to visit, may I suggest visiting around April - May. There are less people on the streets and you'll enjoy yourself a lot more.

I agree - visit Venice before peak tourist season. Even though it is a touristy place to the nth degree, I still find Venice very charming. It is IMPOSSIBLE to take a bad picture there. Everything is beautiful.

Yes, I do wear rose-coloured glasses. They seem to work better than the others I've tried.
