Hotel Review: Traders Hotel, Kuala Lumpur
We've stayed in various different hotels in Kuala Lumpur because as we have been to the city so many times, I'd taken on that going to a hotel and experiencing the different areas of the city is in fact, a travel experience in itself.
This time, as we were staying over new years and wanted to see the new years fireworks (You would've seen the video of it a few posts back) I chose to stay at the Traders Hotel for its location and price.
Normally, say, in Sydney, if you wanted a 4-5 star hotel room that looked over the harbour that would have direct view of the bridge for the new years eve fireworks, you would be looking at around at least AU$400 a night, room only.
At the Traders, I booked a Petronas Twin Towers room for AU$178 per night, including breakfast.
It's location is the draw card. It is right in front of the twin towers, at the edge of the KLCC park. Walk the otherway, the bustling area of Bukit Bintang is only a 15 mins walk away, through a brand new shopping district so you won't even feel the time pass as you walk and wonder this way.
Rooms are well designed with a small but impressive bathroom, unfortunately our bed was not very comfy. You can tell the mattress is starting to wear out.
Besides its location and price, I wasn't too impressed with the rest of the hotel in terms of service and food. Staff at reception are very distant. Service was impersonal, and a little biased. We noticed the well dressed couple at the next service counter was being coo'ed all over while the service we got (we rocked up with casual shorts and t-shirts and our backpacks) was rather cold.
Then there is the food. One thing we always look forward to in a hotel in Asia is the excellent breakfast in the morning. While the display and the dining set up was impressive, the food was extremely disappointing. After having experienced Le Meridien in Kota Kinabalu, the food was bland, even their own Malay style breakfasts, were very dull and uninviting.
When visiting the hotel's website you would've seen a photo of their sky bar with the pool. Looks pretty doesn't it? In fact, it's extremely cramped up there. The pool is very small, and when you are trying to swim a little you feel like you are on display for everyone to watch because immediately surrounding the pool are bar stools and tables and everyone else is sitting there, chatting, drinking and eating and pretty much - watching. Not a relaxing comfortable pool environment at all.
Overall, if the hotel didn't just cost AU$178 for a good view, I would have absolutely hated the hotel. Since it did give us the most impressive firework display we've had for a while, and its very reasonable 5 star price, I give it:
Wow factor: 7/10
Overall score: 6/10.
