Hotel Review: Radisson Hotel, Brunei Darussalam
There isn't very many hotels to choose from in this city of Brunei. At the time of booking, there were a selection of five hotels available, in various different levels of luxury and only one of which was a western branded hotel: The Radisson Hotel.
This hotel sits on the fringe of the city, which isn't really all that far from anywhere you'll want to visit within the city centre. The property itself has changed hands a few times, cycling through Sheraton to now the Radisson, however from previous visitor reviews, the quality has not changed as it seems to be consistently good.
We booked for an advanced purchase rate through the Radisson website for 165BND per night (as of today's rate, it is approx. AUD130) and stayed for three nights in their standard room.
LOCATION: As previously stated, the location of the hotel is on the fringe of the city centre. Across the road is a hawker market that comes alive at night after prayer time and serve excellent local cuisines cheap. Walking into the 'CBD' takes only 5 mins although in the humid tropical heat it feels like a few hours.
THE ROOM: is of a decent size and comfortable. The hotel is designed to be a business hotel, so complimentary internet as well as a good writing desk are standard features.
THE POOL AREA: is small, but empty most of the time as visitors to Brunei are generally out duing their short stay, trying to see as much of the place as they can, so it is likely that you'll get the whole area to yourself.
FOOD: Quite standard to all hotel foods. Expensive and nothing too special. We thought the hawker food stalls served better food at a fraction of the cost.
STAFF: The staff here are the best we've encountered so far. Not only are they friendly, they are professional and pleasant, and try to build a rapport by at least knowing which room you are staying in. After having seen our face a few times, the reception staff knew us by face and greet us each time we pass. At our departure, they offered to call our next hotel (in Malaysia, of a different chain) to advise them of our estimated arrival time. Customer service wouldn't get any better than the staff here at the Radisson.
Overall, we've had a pleasant stay at the Radisson. The hotel itself is pretty standard, but for the price we've paid and the comfort and friendliness we've had, it's up there as one of our favourite hotels in the world.
Wow factor: 6/10
Overall score: 8/10
