Hotel Review: Le Meridien, Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia
(Happy new year everyone! I am just doing some catch up after having arrived back in Aus.)
After our stay in Brunei, my husband requested that we go to Kota Kinabalu (KK) to spend Christmas. It was christmas eve when we arrived, and upon his request, we stayed at the Le Meridien, where we also stayed just a year and a half ago.
This is our second trip to KK (Click to read post on KK - http://www.travelstring.com/kota-kinabalu-sabah/) so I thought this time round I'll do a hotel review.
Le Meridien is right on the harbour, right where the shore front markets and major shopping malls are located. The staffs are friendly and well mannered, and would welcome you with a smile no matter how busy they are.
And they were in fact, very busy. KK is a domestic holiday location to the Malaysians as much as Queensland is for the Australians, and is therefore busy all year round.
The rooms are clean, comfortable and large in size. We had free in-room internet to use, complimentary bottle of water a day and above all, we had part water view from our room, which we didn’t pay extra for.
Since it was Christmas, we decided to ‘splurge’ a little and booked at table with the hotel’s restaurant for their Christmas dinner buffet. It was priced at RM135 per person, which works out to be around AU$44, we had a big selection of everything. At this price, it is extremely expensive for Malaysia, however in AU$ terms for a special event buffet, it’s really cheap. In fact, we have never been disappointed with the food here at Le Meridien, the buffet breakfasts (included in the room rates) in the mornings have been excellent and we were stuffing ourselves everyday because we simply could not resist yet another serving of food!
For a five star hotel, the rates are really not that bad. We booked it for just under AU$170 online per night, the last time we managed to get an early bird price of just AU$110 per night (also online).
Overall, Will and I both give this hotel a big thumbs up, and if I had to grade it, I give it 8/10 (it lost one point on the bathroom plug not working properly, and another point for accidentally putting us on a smoking floor, but we weren't too affected as the floor was not full). We have been using this hotel as a bench mark for other hotels on this trip, which you’ll certainly be reading about in the next couple of weeks!
