Suva - a small big town
Suva is technically the capital city of Fiji, but the locals call it Suva town because it's really still on the small side in 'city' standards.
Suva was approximately 3 hours from the Coral Coast, at least that was how long it took for our driver to drive us there from the resort. Road conditions isn't the best in Fiji, although there is only one high way up and down the coast linking all townships and communities, there are potholes galore and the cars often have to watch out for stray animals (mainly cows and dogs but the odd pig and chickens can appear).
Having seen the villages and towns around the Coral Coast, we pictured Suva to be similar to the rest of Fiji except bigger. However I guess a traveller's perception of a country always lag a few years and we were left to find out that Suva is in fact, just as modern and busy as any other 'cities' in the rest of the world.
It was Christmas eve when we visited, and shopping centres were full of shoppers doing their last minute shopping. We headed for its food court for lunch and had a great many choices from Fijian food, Indian food, Italian food and Chinese food.
And I thought I was going to be stuck eating coconut fish the whole time! Not that it would have been bad. I love coconut fish.
Overall, Suva is not the most interesting place to visit for a tourist, although it is gateway to a lot of the less visited islands off the east coast of Fiji.
