Blackpool of England: the Tackiest Place on Earth
So we were sitting around after having visited the Lakes wondering where we should visit before heading back to Manchester (where my fiance's family lives)
A phone call back to the family confirmed: "Oh you must drop by Blackpool. You'll not see tackier place on this planet."
So, we did.
Wow. The cousin was right. This seaside town with a population of 142,900 was a major centre of tourism during the 19th century. At a glance standing on one end of the town looking toward the other along the coast, this is one big theme park, home to the famous Pepsi Max Big One, a steel roller coaster once the fastest and the tallest (at the same time) at the time of opening in 1994.
Cafes, souvenir shops, and various other rides line the shores with its beaches, small, dirty and extremely windy, left to those looking for some bit of serenity.
There is, at least, the biggest Doctor Who exhibition that was interesting (I am a big Doctor Who fan), otherwise, not exactly somewhere you would want to stay for days.
Unless of course, you like to party. There is a big party scene in Blackpool, evident from the amount of pubs, hotels, clubs available to choose from.
But for the record, we stayed for about 2 hours. I had a fairy floss that was mildly satisfying.
The National Geographic has a photo selection of Blackpool that are much nicer. Perhaps will give you a better impression of the place than I just did....

It's quite a place isn't it? I used to live in Blackpool so it has a warm, fuzzy spot in my heart even though it is definitely tacky
Its main attraction for Northerners is going somewhere close to the sea, there's not much choice up there! I don't think I can call it a beach seeing as it's pebble-riddled with the odd donkey trekking through. And the weather is usually so dismal, as your pics show.
Did you go to the Pleasure Beach (the fun park)? I went on the Big Dipper a few years ago and it frightened the socks off me. Never again...

Tracy - No I didn't go on the rides, I must admit I am afraid of all those motion adrenaline things...
I could imagine living there would be different to visiting.

While I will agree that Blackpool is tacky that's part of its history, it always was a working class resort.
But if you want to go somewhere that has huge amounts of things to do then Blackpool is the place!!!!! Here are a couple of sites with details:
Blackpool Attractions or Blackpool Events and for the biggest free light show on earth try Blackpool Illuminations
