15 hours in Santiago, Chile
I had to stop over Santiago on my way from Sydney -> Auckland to Peru. It was a hard decision whether or not to just wait in the airport for 15 hours, or risk paying the US$55 entry visa to see the city. Thankfully, I had this all worked out before I departed, and using the network of Hospitality Club I was able to find a local student to accommodate me for the night and to take me around and see as much as we could possibly see in 10 hours (15 hours minus transport time and airport time)
And was I glad I did. Santiago is a very modern city, and has a strong European and US atmosphere depending on which parts you visit. An extremely efficient metro system (why does every other country have better public transport than us?) takes you all around the city and many of the attractions.
My guide had others from Hospitality Club staying with her which meant I always had a travel companion. Walking around the city centre was a breeze, and the many shops and cafes made it a pleasant sight seeing day. It is unfortunately quite smoggy which made the bright sunshine day seem grey.
As I must have been quite dazed for the 15 hours I spent in Santiago, and my diary isn't helping with the details of my stay, I shall resort to simply, showing you some of the photos I took.
