Bula Fiji !!
I finally have new material to write about
Earlier this year, we've made the decision that we'd travel this christmas, and it was going to be a family trip.
So it had to be somewhere, that is not too adventurous (which would've suited us but not the rest of the family), not too boring (for us), not too expensive (for mum and dad) and not too inaccessible (for mum)
So we chose what most Aussie family would consider for a holiday - a holiday in Fiji.
We flew in in the afternoon and got our transfer to the hotel on the Coral Coast, on the main island of Fiji.
We had booked the Rydges Hideaway Resort as it was nothing flash, but I have heard good things about. It's not luxury, but all the accommodation are bure style rooms, not like multi-level hotel style rooms. It was right on the beach, with excellent snorkelling just 50m away, also have its own dive shop which I had the pleasure of going diving with. Although the rooms are a little runned down, but still comfortable and in general the resort staff were extremely friendly.
It is currently wet season in Fiji, notably only a week ago cyclone Mike swept through detroyed a couple of villages and killed people. While we were there and took day trips out we could see up-rooted trees, holes on the roofs of the houses and many of the villagers still rebuilding parts of their homes.
Generally people associate Fiji with fun in the sun and the beaches. It was, a wonderful place for swimming, lazing around on the white sand, snorkelling, and joining a couple of the many beach/pool volleyball games held at the resort. But we decided there had to be more to Fiji to discover, since most of the main island is covered by mountain and plains. So for 2 days we hired a driver to take us around, and have visited some amazing places as well as the city life in Suva for a taste of the alternative Fiji.
I'll cover each in detail in the posts to follow
