20th Anniversary of the fall of Berlin Wall

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, and is the perfect time to visit Berlin as all major museums will be participating in exhibitions to educate the public about the division and unification of Germany, the past and the future.

For those interested in the World War II and the history of Germany's role and Hitler's third reich. The city is full of contradictions, full of war remains and newly constructed modern buildings. The government had wanted it like this, keeping the old with the new, to remind everyone what the war does to a place, the damage it can cause, the pain and suffering - never again.

From May to October this year an exhibition of memorabilia relating to the Wall will be held on Alexanderplatz. The official anniversary happens on Commemoration day - 9 Nov 2009 - where there will be fireworks and concerts held at the Brandenburg Gate, the once heavily guarded link between East and West Germany.

Berlin is always a great city for the young and hip, with lots of pubs and night clubs and jazz scene to be enjoyed. I also remember having the best doner kebab in Berlin. Definitely a must see city when visiting Germany.

Gosh, I can't believe it's been 20 years.

Hiya Amy,

I'm thinking of visiting Berlin, Copenhagen and Stockholm this winter, when it's nice and warm over there... wondering whether or not to include Helsinki in there, and whether to spend the rest of time seeing more of Europe (greater value for money) or pursue some US destinations as well on the thrill of a RTW trip... (In the US I would want to see New York City and Boston, at the very least.)

Do you have any suggestions for me?
