Visit Australia: Victor Harbour

Speaking of Little Penguins, there are places other than Phillip Island where you can view them in the wild. 80Km south of Adelaide where the Southern Ocean closes in on Encounter Bay, lies the township of Victor Harbour, where colonies of Little Penguins also waddle their way through the cold waters onto the shores for your viewing pleasures.

Beautiful beaches makes it a great summer vacation spot (photo taken in Winter - the water was cold)

Penguin Discovery tours are held at Granite Island, a short tram* ride from Victor Harbour. Unlike Phillip Island, there are usually less crowds here, as they only take small tour groups, and you can follow the guide all the way around the island, to ensure you don't miss a penguin taking a different route home.

Penguin Warning
Another penguin warning sign - you can never be too safe!

To reach Granite Island, there is, of course the tram, as mentioned above. Well, you could walk over the bridge easily without the need of wheeled transport however, there is something special about this tram - it's a horse drawn railed carriage.

Since 1894, the horses have been pulling these wooden tram carriages taking visitors from Victor Harbour to Granite Island. Several Clydesdale horses take turns in working and they are treated with respect and love. The tram is now an iconic attraction in Victor Harbour and a must do (at least one way) for all visitors, even if it means travelling slower than walking speed, it's worth the trip.

All buckled up and ready to go! The horse drawn tram is an icon of Victor Harbour.

With the little penguins and the horse tram, Victor Harbour is a place well suited for family holidays. Kids will love being on the tram and looking at little penguins while adults will enjoy the beautiful surrounding environment.

Southern Right Whales cross the Southern Oceans to nurse their young from late May to October. These giant beauties of the sea stay around long enough for you to sight them from Victor Harbour and other surrounding coastlines.

Visit the SA Whale Centre at Victor Harbour to learn more about their activity and behaviours.
