Sunny cold Hobart

I am actually in Bali at the moment, but last weekend I was in Hobart with my folks and I thought I'd catch up on some posts I should have written a couple of days ago...

There was really no special occassion. Mum and Dad havent really had a holiday for a while due to mum's illness and as she couldn't fly long hours we decided to take her to Hobart (one other reason is that she is sensitive to heat, and Tassie seemed perfect for getting away from the heat)

We hired a car and drove to our hotel in Sandy Bay, the Wrest Point Casino Hotel (mum and dad was paying ) - I was impressed with the place, knowing that 4 star hotels in Australia can be overrated from time to time, but I was genuinely pleased with this one. The room was big and comfortable, and the view (from the Tower Harbour View Rooms) were awsome. The staff at the reception and the valet parking desk were ever so friendly and the food at the bistro was great. My only disappointment was the pool - it was the size of your average backyard pool and just didn't really match the standard of the rest of the place at all.

Anyways, so we explored Hobart a little, had coffee on the waterfront and shopped in the city centre. I was surprised with the relatively smaller population their peak hour traffic can still get quite chaotic!

Hobart itself didn't have very many tourist interests and understandably it is just another city with offices and shops. Most people do some to Tassie to do a driving holiday but with the very short time we had here (a whole 3 days) we decided to take it easy and only just visit the nearby places.

The first town we visited was Richmond, a very small town about 35 mins drive outside Hobart. There is one strip of road with shops on it, a gaol on the heritage list, a bridge built by convicts and an attraction with a miniture Hobart city of the 1820s. The highlight was probably the drive itself. As soon as you get out of the city, the picturesque landscape reveals itself and shows why lots of people just love it here. Small wineries are everywhere and as much as it is cold the sun still peaked through and kept the hills at a crisp shade of green.

Richmond Bridge
The little village of Richmond is only 30 mins drive from Hobart and is worth a day trip - Richmond Bridge, built by the convicts in 1825

Unfortunately this time with my parents, limited by time as well as my mum's illness, I didn't get to see what I really wanted to see in Tassie - I didn't even make it to Port Arthur and the Cascade Brewery... I guess that gives me another reason to return. Next time, with Will so we can get some serious nature activities in!
