Visit Australia: Adelaide

I have decided it's about time to introduce our beautiful country - there is too little out there (besides the publications dedicated to Australian tourism) that promote the beauty of our homeland to others.

Welcome to the first of Visit Australia - Thought I'd start with Adelaide, my favourite city.

I'd like to clarify - although I am from Sydney, I claim not to be a city person and often prefer to be somewhere quieter and less chaotic. When it comes to still have to be in a city for jobs, Adelaide is perfect.

Visiting Adelaide is like stepping out of the usual hot, sticky summer and windy wet winters of Sydney, into a beautiful pleasant European city. Built on each side of the Torrens river, this leafy city offers just as much excitement as any modern large cities. Firstly, a stroll along the Torrens is a pleasant way to relax and exercise a little before settling down for a good cup of coffee in a small cafe in the city. The entire city centre of Adelaide is surrounded by parklands, perfect to kick a ball around or meet family and friends for a small picnic on weekends. A free city loop bus is available for everyone, providing a faster way of getting around to the other side of the city. Otherwise, walking is fairly easy in Adelaide.

Museums are a plenty in Adelaide, as well as many heritage sites including the old Adelaide Gaol. Adelaide is also a great place to base yourself at to access its beautiful surroundings such as Adelaide Hills, where the historic town of Hahndorf resides and access to many wineries in the Hills as well as Barossa Valley. Driving south from Adelaide will also take you along to Victor Harbour, and north to Port Adelaide.

Make sure to catch the tram to historic Glenelg, first settlement site for South Australia where there are plenty of cafes and restaurants, and broadwalk along the coast and quality accommodation. The tram leaves every 15 mins from Victoria Square and takes approximately half an hour to arrive.

Those into the ocean will be glad to know that Adelaide also have excellent beaches for swimming, surfing and boarding. Hop over to the Kangaroo Island for some excellent scuba diving and wild life experience, where fur seals live in harmony with their surroundings.

Besides Adelaide, South Australia offers one of the best wine and gourmet food regions and is also known as the Festival State of Australia, where food, wine, music and many other forms of festivals during the year keep any visitor entertained.

Wonderful post Amy, it must have taken you ages, and I especially liked the tall ship (if it could be called that atop the pillar.

I'm full of praise, what more can I say.

Haha Stanley - well guess what? Melbourne is on my list tomorrow

Katyzzz, the tall ship was suppose to be the 'ship' that sailed to settle Adelaide. I didn't have a picture of the proper Glenelg unfortunately, will have to make another trip to get that photo!

I really like this Amy, and look forward to travelling our country with you!

Would also love it if you did some posts on less known places in Australia that are really special. I grew up in country Victoria, and always love reading books or watching docos set there. Many happy memories!

I'll keep an eye out for your next post.

Hi Amy

I have never been to Adelaide. It sounds like a really picturesque place... and anything likened to Europe grabs my attention straight away!

Hi Michaelie - Thanks for your comment! I will try to write about less visited places but I want to keep to my rule that I will only write about places I have been. Most 'less visited' places I would have been to would be in and around NSW as I am based in Sydney but I'll definitely put a couple in in my next installment of 'Visit Australia' (which will appear every few weeks for a week)

Ash - I do definitely like Adelaide, and yes it's very much like Europe!!!
