Adventurous Rotorua
Just quickly on the adventure front (because it's hard to put adventure to words), Rotorua is slowly catching up with the reputation of Queenstown to be the adventure capital of the North Island.
There is the Skyline Gondola which gives you a chance to view this beautiful lake and city from above, enjoy a fun ride on the Luge and have lunch and dinner with the best view of Rotorua.
Agroventures has all the latest extreme fun - try the Sweeb, and Swoop and the Skydiving simulator for starters. There are also the usual Bungy and Jet boating, and just around the corner, the Zorb - literally a giant plastic ball rolling down the hill with you in it.
Tell me this doesn't look scary! (the Swoop - I had the fortunate (or unfortunate? hehe) chance of trying it!
The local rivers provide some of the best rafting experiences you'll have, including Kaituna River which has the highest commercially rafted waterfall at 7 meters drop. If you've never rafted - don't worry. I never rafted before I did this, but the staff takes care of you well, and we didn't even fall out of the boat! You'll be fine

The Sweeb - featured on Getaway last year. it's a human powered monorail - it's harder than you think!
